A man using a metal detector found a wedding ring, the Brabant village of Odiliapeel, that has been missing for 83 years, the local broadcaster DTV Nieuws reports. The ring has now returned to the son of the owner, who has since passed away.
Jo Nabuurs lost the ring in the winter of 1942 or 1943 when he was threshing grain behind the farm. He had married in 1941.
The man with the metal detector found the ring about 20 centimeters underground. A relative who lives near the family’s former home heard about the discovery and contacted the son, Bert Nabuurs, telling him to be prepared for a visitor.
“I thought it was quite unusual,” Nabuurs told DTV Nieuws. “I even asked whether he wanted a reward, but he didn’t.”
The man said there is no doubt that the ring belonged to his father. He said the family is happy to have the ring back, which has his parents’ wedding date engraved on its inside.
“My brothers and sisters think it’s fantastic that the ring has been found. The ring is still in good condition. It has always been kept dry.”
