PSV pick up a 2-0 win against Heerenveen in the first Eredivisie game after the international break. A goal from Guus Til and an own goal from Marcus Linday gave Peter Bosz’s side the win, which could put them at the top of the table by the end of the weekend.
PSV played in a special Coen Dillen-themed kit to mark the 100th birthday of the club legend, nicknamed Het Kanon (“The Cannon”). The shirt featured a vintage logo, long sleeves and no player names on the back.
Peter Bosz left out experienced winger Ivan Perisic, keeping him on the bench to start Esmir Bajraktarevic in his place. Lutsharel Geertruida was also put on the bench.
Heerenveen Winger Maxemce Rivera forced PSV keeper Matej Kovar into two saves just before the 17th minute. The second was an audacious lob from around 30 meters which almost caught the Czech keeper by surprise.
And yet the French winger failed to get the easiest opportunity on target. A great pass from Nolhan Courtens found Rivera one-on-one with Kovar, but he dragged the shot wide of the goal.
PSV broke the deadlock in the 29th minute. Bajraktarevic did well to beat Vasilios Zagaritis before his cross with the weaker right foot was knocked on by Heerenveen keeper Bernt Klaverboer to Guus Til, who was on hand to nod it into the empty net.
Heerenveen, who made a good impression in the first half, were unfortunate not to level in the 38th minute. Zagiritis came forward and played a low cross that Kovar got a leg on before it bounced off Marcus Linday, with Jacob Trenskow behind him for a tap-in.
It was a reasonably uneventful second half. The biggest controversy came when PSV defender Armando Obispo, already on a yellow card, held an opponent but was not booked again. Linday protested and received a yellow card himself.
PSV seemed to have more control and had the game won when they scored their second in the 68th minute. Two of Bosz’s substitutes made an immediate impact. Perisic took a corner and found Filip Kostic, who headed it back across goal and saw it go in via the unfortunate Linday. It was both players’ first touch of the ball.
PSV will now focus on the UEFA Champions League, where they face RB Salzburg on Tuesday. Heerenveen’s next game is at home against Excelsior.
